Every so often a year comes along that changes the course of direction. 2012 was a year like that on many levels. It's a good thing!
It was a year of artwork commissions for me as well. Here are some highlights.
This pastel was a sample piece I tried for a "new process" I thought up. I was wanting to make chalk pastels bigger than the paper I could find, and on panel. Worked out pretty nicely I think.

The planet seems especially grateful for spring this year, and spring seems especially fertile and beautiful. It has been hard to reconcile World tragedies of epic proportions with the beauty of spring. I keep those who are suffering in my thoughts and look for ways to be of service. After I juried the Virginia Intermont Fine Arts Exhibition and the Mountain Empire Community College Exhibition I turned my attentions to my own Virginia Highlands Student Exhibition at William King Museum. We had about 60 to 75 guests! I must confess, I am thinking of summer even as the daffodils fade, and the large task I have set for myself in my solo museum show. I am excited and anxious to be able to devote my full attentions to production! I dearly love my students, and they require significant attention in their own right, so I postpone huge new projects a few more weeks, working on sketches and models and plans. Today I will deliver a painting! Yippee! The economy moves! And I already have large rocks picked out to edge a new fire pit out back. What joy to be past the deep freeze!Valhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07718391155351706579noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4405747758282737969.post-63575273269704597262011-03-09T09:01:00.000-05:002011-03-09T09:04:57.082-05:00Busy Busy! This grand adventure continues full tilt! The sculpture in bronze of two life-sized children was commissioned by CASA of East Tennessee. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates for abused and neglected children in juvenile court. Light of Hope is both a memorial to loves lost due to child abuse and a celebration of lives saved by caring.

Friday, November 6th 2009 at 2pm at the Carey E. Garrett Juvenile Court Building in Knoxville, TN.

The concepts for the sculpture were explored and refined in numerous meetings between myself and the CASA volunteers, board members and director, Carolyn Doty. Initally we did not know if it would be marble or bronze, abstract or representational. At one point I asked "What emotion(s) do you want the sculpture to evoke? What do you want people to feel when they see this piece?" The answer was "Rage. And Hope." Rage that this problem exists in our community, Hope that we can make a positive change. From that consensus, I presented a dozen designs that were discussed and refind into the powerful piece you see today. I chose the shape of a compressed triangle to deliberately call attention that this was not a standard "stable" square or rectangle, that something was askew. Diagonals in artworks are "action" loaded, and as you follow the sidewalk around the sculpture, the diagonals created by the stone call for action. I chose the black granite stone and the traditional cemetary base stone as a not-so-subtle reminder that this is a true monument. The distressed child on the right sits atop the inscription "In Memory of Lives Lost to Child Abuse" and the compforting child on the left, who has an arm around the shoulders of the first child, sits atop the inscription "In Celebration of Lives Saved Through Caring." The life-sized children are a compilation of kind neighbors' and friends' children as I did not have specific models to work from.

Valhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07718391155351706579noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4405747758282737969.post-67641366623246103142009-11-04T17:14:00.000-05:002009-11-04T18:26:28.749-05:00Phooey on Vandalism

Replaced the three stolen bronze sculptures in downtown Bristol for the permanent children's scavenger hunt based in the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" over Halloween week-end.
